Course description

This course will let you take your first steps into improvisation theatre. Both people with and without acting experience are welcome to explore what an empty stage can turn into, using just your own imagination. You will rediscover your natural spontaneity by going outside of your comfort zone and surprise yourself with the splendid outcome. Participants will get to know the principles of improvisation, and explore them in improv games and exercises focusing on characters, emotions, decor, and story. The course ends with a student showcase on December 21st.

Course description

In this intermediate course, we will start from the basic principles of improv and continue adding more advanced concepts and skills. We will integrate all of this into performing full scenes. Students will get a taste of a few different forms of improv. The course ends with a student showcase on December 21st.

Why should I participate?

This course is recommended for people who have followed at least an introductory course in improvised theatre and want to explore this art and skill more. Be it with the ambition to be on stage more, to become a better public speaker or to become a better person. We definitely need people who want to have a lot of fun!

The teachers

Tim Gheysens started playing improvisation theatre in 2011 by following the course of the Belgian Improvisation League (BIL). He is co-founder of the improv troupe Swaajp and previously taught several introductory courses. At the age of 5 he had his first stage experience, being called on stage to tell a joke at a local comedian's Christmas show. Unfortunately, the adults in the audience didn't get his avant-garde sense of humour, a traumatic experience he is still trying to overcome. Before starting improv he did spoken word performances and acted in plays, ranging from the song of Hiawatha to Hamlet. You can see Tim in the Swaajp improv shows, both in Dutch and English.

Ben Verhoeven is a co-founder and the managing director of Swaajp Improtheater. Ben started playing theatre at age 8, after some very impressive performances at the Verhoeven family parties. By age 18, he finished a degree in drama and theatre at GAMW Schoten. After taking a three-year improvisation course at the Belgian Improvisation League (BIL), Swaajp was founded as a laboratory in which different styles and formats of improv could be experimented with. Since then, Ben is frequently participating in international festivals (e.g. in Amsterdam, Lausanne and Ljubljana) and performing abroad (e.g. in Karlsruhe, The Hague and Utrecht) . He also applies his drum skills to improv as an accompanying musician.
